January 28, 2023: “Ancient Globalization: Commerce and Connection”: Contrary to much of received opinion, economic connections among distant people (what we now know as “globalization”) long preceded the last century or two. This session deals with several major patterns of economic entanglement in much earlier times: the trans-Eurasian Silk Roads, the Sea Roads of Indian Ocean commerce, and the Sand Roads of trans-Saharan trade. What were political, economic and cultural results of this early globalization?  How did they differ from more recent experiences of globalization?
