Creating a Location Resource Guide for Reasonably Exhaustive Research — Pennsylvania Example

In genealogy, as in real estate, location, location, location is very important. Resources for genealogy research vary by time period and from place to place.Time and energy can be saved for multiple searches by creating a resource guide by state and/or county. This presentation provides ideas on how to create a resource guide. A resource guide for Pennsylvania will be used as an example and will be included as part of the handout.

Janet Keating McNaughton, JD, is a retired lawyer who worked for over 30 years in Arizona primarily as a prosecutor for the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. For over 25 years she has been researching her children’s family history. The majority of her family research is in Pennsylvania where families came from foreign countries and stayed in Pennsylvania until her parents and her husband’s parents moved to Arizona.

Janet has attended courses at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). Her research trips include visits to Washington, DC, the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, and
government offices and historical and genealogical societies throughout Pennsylvania. Between 2014 and 2019, she served as president of the Tempe Chapter of the Family History Society of Arizona. She and her husband currently reside in Berks County, Pennsylvania, where her son,
daughter-in-law, and grandsons also reside.
