CANCELLED - Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County Lecture Series -- Evergreen Cemetery: Reversing a Cherished Myth, Dr. Traci Bliss, guest speaker
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!
How much effort did it take to dislodge deeply embedded but inaccurate cemetery history? Professor Bliss will discuss her unusual research process followed by compelling stories: people of Evergreen Cemetery — born in the 19th century — who helped define Santa Cruz. Learn about prominent musicians and artists ardently committed to the community, resilient Chinese and the pioneer families who supported them, and the women who defied social norms to make enduring contributions.
Traci Bliss, who serves on the Historic Presentation Commission, is an award-winning emerita professor of education and author of several books including Santa Cruz’s Seabright with Randall Brown. Her book, Evergreen Cemetery of Santa Cruz, captures the diverse range of interconnected lives at Evergreen beginning with its creation in 1858. Her ancestors — the Imus family — donated land for Evergreen Cemetery and began settling in Santa Cruz in the late 1840s. Bliss is the 7th generation of Imus women to live here. Her BA, MA, and PhD degrees are from Stanford and she holds an MPA from the LBJ School, University of Texas at Austin.
