Reach for the Stars: Dark Skies

Reach for the Stars: Dark Skies

Local astronomy educator Andy Kreyche will review the natural, cultural, and scientific significance of dark, light ... and light pollution. Our perception of the cosmos and knowledge about it all came about by observing and interpreting light. Yet our natural love of light has left a void in the appreciation of what darkness provides. The overuse of artificial light at night was first characterized as a problem by astronomers, as it interfered with their view of the heavens. We now know that the ill effects of light pollution are widespread, causing disruption to living things running the gamut from plankton to people.
