What Got You Here WILL Get You There: Approaching the Job Market after 60

Are you 60+ and want or need to re-enter the paid work force? This 4-session series is an opportunity to evaluate your skills, talents and experiences through a new lens as well as arm you with the strategies, resources and confidence to support you in approaching and succeeding in today’s job market. Join a dedicated cohort of participants who will commit to attendance at each session as each session builds on the previous session’s work. Please plan to bring your laptop (library will provide laptops for those who don’t have one). Session 1:  Tuesday, August 5; 12pm – 5pm

The case for hiring older workers; getting Work Ready and exploring the foundations of a 21st Century Resume and LinkedIn profile. Work on managing change, exploring transferrable skills, and building a focus for the job search.

Session 2:  Thursday, August 7; 12pm – 5pm

Building the resume with accomplishment statements, background summaries, and cover letters. Using AI in your job search with guest presenter David Dennis. Library resources for resume writing.

Session 3:  Tuesday, August 12; 12pm – 5pm

Looking for Jobs in All the Right Places! There are many ways to surface job opportunities. We will explore all methods, including myths and realities as well as out of the box approaches. Alex Murchison from LinkedIn will talk about all the ways to use LinkedIn for the job search with an emphasis on Networking. He will also offer some tips on the LinkedIn profile as well. Learn about Library resources related to surfacing job opportunities. Discover the power of networking.

Session 4:  Thursday, August 14; 12pm – 5pm

Interviewing – Presenting Your Best Self! Learn how to present yourself as the best candidate for the job!  Review common interview formats and approaches such as behavior-based questions. Practice! Practice! Practice!  Get interview practice and explore interview resources available at the library. Gain confidence, anticipate pitfalls and how to avoid them. Resume and cover letter review.

About the Facilitator

Nancy Jones has worked in the field of adult career, leadership and talent development for more than 20 years.  She brings positive and creative energy to individual coaching and the design and facilitation of lively and interactive programs.  She has extensive experience in both corporate and academic settings.

David Dennis is an expert in enterprise and consumer software product development, sustainable business practices, sporting goods marketing, photography, teaching, writing, and philanthropy. He is a visionary entrepreneur and inspirational speaker with a Master's degree in Political Science and a Bachelor's in Sociology from San Diego State University.

Alex Murchison  is a lawyer with LinkedIn.
