Santa Cruz Black 2025 Film Series
Santa Cruz Black's 2nd annual BLACK on Screen Film Series will premiere on Juneteenth week.
We'll be screening Soundtrack To A Coup d'Etat, by director Johan Grimonpres. This 2024 documentary was nominated for 2025 Best documentary feature category, however it did not win. It lost to No Other Land, another worthy documentary. This film examines the cold war episode when 16 African nations were admitted into the United Nations, power shifts away from the colonial powers, and Jazz musicians at a time when Black Americans, the overthrow of Lumumba and Republic of the Congo, the Eisenhower administration, Malcolm X, Black Jazz ambassadors and so much more. This is a 150 minutes of world history: colonialism, jazz musicians stepped onto the global political stage to lend their voices to inadvertently being agents to undermining African sovereignty. We hope to see you at one of our two screenings: Tuesday, Jun17th at the Capitola Library, and Thursday, June 19th at the Resource Center for Nonviolence. Register for the screening on the 19th at the RCNV HERE. We will offer light refreshments and drink before the film and a Discussion post screening. Doors open at 5:30 pm, Movie starts at 6 pm.
