Turning Over A New Leaf—How the Aptos Apple Warehouse was Saved and Preserved
A talk by Swenson Builders, Thacher & Thompson Architects, and The Aptos History Museum.
Saturday, September 7 @ 1:00pm, in the Betty Leonard Community Room of the Aptos Branch Library.
The building occupied by the New Leaf Community Market in Aptos Village traces its origins to a huge warehouse where local Aptos-grown apples were packed. The warehouse, formerly located next to Trout Gulch Road, was constructed by the Hihn ("Heen") company in the early 1900s. Frederick Augustus Hihn (1829-1913) was a Gold Rush argonaut who "rounded the Horn" in 1849 and made his fortune in Santa Cruz County.
Long-time Aptos residents remember the warehouse as "Village Fair Antiques" from the 1960s to 2015. In the renovation of Aptos Village, elements of the original warehouse were integrated with new construction to create the historically evocative commercial space now occupied by New Leaf.
The Aptos History Museum will tell the story of the warehouse; Swenson Builders and Thacher & Thompson Architects will tell how it was preserved and relocated. In honor of the occasion, members of The Friends of the Aptos Library will provide "a-peeling" tables of home-baked goods for sampling, featuring apples.
This free talk in the Betty Leonard Community room of the Aptos Branch Library is sponsored by The Friends of the Aptos Library and The Aptos History Museum. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of New Leaf Community Market.
