Author Talk with Susannah Kennedy

Author Talk with Susannah Kennedy

Susannah Kennedy's Reading Jane is an award-winning memoir that reads like fiction, a vivid study of narratives, the power of parenthood and what freedom looks like when we choose to examine the uncomfortable past. The book will be released on September 5, 2023.

Susannah Kennedy is a Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist, former journalist, mother of three.

Throughout my life, daring to ‘read’ my mother had been my act of salvation, a counter joust to her demands. I wasn’t different from many lone daughters of unconventional mothers. But then my mother, healthy and fit, committed suicide and left me 45 years of hidden diaries. I could have burned them. I read them instead.

And embarked on a journey of psychological re-awakening. When people wonder whether ‘only words’ can influence heart rate, muscle tension, aches and illness, I answer with my story.  I’m excited to share it with the world. I’m hoping it will inspire readers to look into their own connections with childhood, how those early years influence well, everything, in particular detailed ways, and how we as adults can learn to thrive and heal when we learn how to be reflective and curious.
